What universities do with it

  • There is no pass or fail mark and no fixed weight: each university uses the LNAT its own way.
  • They read it alongside your grades, your application and personal statement and, at some, an interview.
  • The essay may shape interview questions, be compared with your personal statement, or decide between borderline applicants.
  • LNAT's advice for the essay: take a position and defend it, clearly and without wasted words.

Leave nothing blank

Worked example Four questions left

With a minute to go, Leo has answered 38 questions and has 4 left.

Why this works: Guess all 4. A wrong answer costs nothing, so each guess can only add a mark.

Why the tempting route fails: Leaving them blank to avoid mistakes: blanks and wrong answers both score zero.
