Worked example Weaken the argument
Some councils now publish every planning objection online, with the objector's name removed. Supporters say this lets residents see whether a proposal is opposed by many people or by a few who write often. Critics reply that publication will deter objections, because people fear neighbours will recognise their words. Yet the same councils report that the number of objections has not fallen since publication began. That suggests the critics' worry, while understandable, has not been borne out.
Which of the following, if true, would most weaken the author's conclusion?
- A. Most objections are submitted by residents who live close to the proposed site.
- B. Since publication began, the number of planning applications in these councils has roughly doubled.
- C. Some residents have said they find the published objections useful.
- D. Councils that do not publish objections have also seen no fall in the number of objections.
- E. The councils remove objectors' names before publishing.
Why this works: B. If applications doubled while objections stayed level, objections per application roughly halved. That fits the deterrence the critics feared, so a flat total no longer shows their worry was wrong.
Why the tempting route fails: D sounds relevant but changes nothing: flat numbers elsewhere do not show what would have happened here. A and C are about who objects or who reads, not whether people were put off.

What useful feedback looks like
Worked example Repair an argument
A student writes: "All lectures should be recorded because some students miss lectures." What is missing?
Why this works: The reason supports access for absent students, but the claim covers every lecture. The next draft should narrow "all" or defend it against seminars where recording stops open discussion.
Why the tempting route fails: "Add more examples" or better vocabulary leaves the gap in the reasoning untouched.
