The 95-minute stamina plan
The average budget is about seconds per question or minutes seconds per passage. Averages guide the sitting, but passage checkpoints control it.
Translate the section into two usable budgets
Questions differ in difficulty and passages differ in density, so these are control figures. The useful decision is whether one passage is taking time that belongs to the final third of the section.
Use three passage checkpoints
| After | Target elapsed | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Passage | About minutes | Settle the method before fatigue arrives |
| Passage | About minutes | Protect time for the final third |
| Passage | About minutes | Finish passage before returning to flags |
A small drift can be absorbed by a shorter passage. A large drift needs a decision: select the best supported option, flag the question and move.
Flag a decision, not a blank page
- Eliminate options the passage clearly defeats.
- Select the current best answer because wrong answers lose no marks.
- Flag only when a precise return task exists, such as 'compare the scope words in B and D'.
- Move before rereading the entire passage without a new question.
Worked example Audit one slow passage
Passage takes minutes. You answer three questions confidently and leave one flagged between B and D. The return note says 'D says always; passage says often'.
At the next checkpoint, you are only minute seconds behind because Passage was short. What should you do?
Why this works: Continue. The passage-group checkpoint shows recovery, and the return note makes the flag cheap to revisit.
Why the tempting route fails: Rushing every remaining question to repay the full minutes seconds ignores the time already recovered.
Train the concentration curve
- Week : two-passage sets with a clean error log.
- Week : four-passage sets finishing at the first checkpoint.
- Week : eight-passage sets that cross the one-hour dip.
- Week : one full -passage rehearsal, then targeted repair before the next full run.
