An essay asks: Should local councils permit facial recognition at public events? The thesis argues that police use should be limited to serious threats under independent oversight. Which paragraph fails to prove that claim?
  • A narrow authorisation can require police to name the threat before scanning begins. Deleting non-matching images then limits the effect on people who were not relevant to the investigation.Chosen
  • Retailers also use cameras to understand which products attract attention. This shows that facial recognition has many possible commercial applications.
  • Independent oversight means that a body outside the police reviews requests. Without that review, the limit to serious threats would rest on the judgment of those who want to use the technology.
  • The strongest objection is that a serious label could be applied too easily. Requiring an external authoriser to give reasons makes that label contestable before the scan occurs.
  • The policy should be reviewed after use, including whether innocent people were repeatedly scanned. A rule that cannot learn from those results is not meaningful oversight.
