What it covers
The five LNAT papers (forms A1 to E1) sat in 2014-15 by 6,992 candidates and in 2015-16 by 7,849, from the LNAT Consortium's technical reports: the last national paper-by-paper figures it has made public.

Method
- For each paper the reports give the mean and spread of the number right (raw) and of the reported score. Pearson, who ran the analysis, describes placing papers on one scale by Rasch equating.
- We line each paper's raw scores up with its reported scores by matching the two means and spreads: reported is about reported mean plus (raw minus raw mean) times reported spread over raw spread.
- A second, simpler method only shifts by the difference in means. The shaded range runs from the lower to the higher of the two, widened by half a mark each way.
- We show the same number right on every paper that year, so you can see how much the paper mattered.
Uncertainty and limits
- Matching means and spreads reproduces each paper's summary figures, not Pearson's actual score table, which is not published. Near the top and bottom the real table can bend away from a straight line.
- The shaded range is the gap between two simple methods, not a statistical interval.
- Raw scores outside those actually seen on a paper are flagged: the straight line there is an extrapolation.
- Each paper's measurement error was about 2.8 raw marks, so the same candidate could score a few marks differently on another day.

What the answer means
The answer shows how far one historical paper's reported score was from the number right, and how much that varied between papers in the same year. It cannot convert a score from today's LNAT, the official practice tests or any commercial mock. The Consortium does not publish how current papers are scored beyond a score out of 42.

Questions people ask
Is the LNAT score the number of questions you get right?
Not always exactly. In the LNAT's 2014-15 and 2015-16 technical reports, papers were put on one scale, and each paper's reported scores had a different mean and spread from its raw scores. On paper A1 in 2014-15, 25 right corresponded to a reported score of about 23; on paper B1 the same year, about 25.6.
Is the LNAT scaled?
The Consortium's technical reports describe Pearson equating papers of different difficulty onto one scale, so a harder paper does not cost you. Current scoring details are published only to member universities.
Can I convert my LNAT practice test score?
No reliable conversion exists. The official practice tests have no published score table, and these historical papers are a different test from today's. Treat a practice score as a guide to your number right, not a prediction.
What is a good LNAT score?
